About this course

Participants study jazz standards through ensemble playing and apply different approaches to improvising over their chord structures. The course combines practical playing with discussion of theoretical concepts and approaches to practice. Topics include major scale modes such as Phrygian, Lydian and Locrian, chord-tone soloing, rhythmic and melodic vocabulary, major and minor II-V-I sequences, the Lydian dominant scale, and guide and approach tones. It forms the second term of a three-term course.

• Analyse chord and scale relationships, including II-V-I sequences, blues scales, chromaticism and modulation
• Build a repertoire of jazz tunes
• Use structured approaches to personal practice

The course is intended for improver-level players who have basic technical competence on their instrument, can read music and understand chord structures. It involves ensemble playing, theoretical discussion and regular individual practice, with punctual and engaged participation expected.

Before you go

• Players should bring their own instrument; a piano is provided.
• Bring manuscript paper, a notebook and writing materials.
• The instruments and course content may involve high volume levels; earplugs are strongly encouraged.
