About this course
The workshop examines jazz language through traditional, bebop and contemporary approaches, with work on repertoire, scales, arpeggios, chord sequences, harmony and phrasing. The tutor demonstrates the coursework, including relevant theory, rhythm and technique, while participants perform exercises with accompaniment on guitar, piano or backing tracks. Lessons include feedback, advice and question-and-answer sessions. Play-along tracks support practice between classes, allowing participants to work on improvisational techniques and apply different structures to jazz solos in a swing-feel style.

This course is intended for experienced jazz players at improver level who are developing towards advanced improvisation. A reasonable command of an instrument, basic knowledge of chord symbols and harmony, some improvising ability and some reading skills are expected. Regular practice between lessons is essential.
