About this course

Participants develop jewellery pieces and small objects through research-led design briefs, exploring techniques selected for each project. The course encourages work with a broader range of materials and approaches beyond traditional jewellery design, alongside personal project development. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussion and individual technical or critical advice. Learners set personal goals with the tutor, record their ideas and samples in a benchbook, and work towards a professional finish and considered design decisions.

What you'll learn

  • Develop original jewellery designs from research and a project brief
  • Select and apply techniques appropriate to a design theme
  • Record designs, ideas, samples and techniques in a benchbook
  • Evaluate tools, techniques and personal work when making design decisions
  • Extend jewellery concepts through less conventional materials and approaches

Is this course right for you?

  • Previous jewellery-making study of around two years is required
  • Independent work forms a significant part of the course
  • A moderate level of fitness is needed to use the jewellery equipment
  • Lift access is available to the third-floor studio

Before you go

  • Workshop tools are available for use, and small quantities of base metals are provided.
  • Learners need to buy materials such as silver, gold, stones, saw blades and drill bits for their projects.
  • Bring a small benchbook and a pencil or pen for recording ideas and notes.
  • Bring an apron, tie back long hair and wear sensible footwear. Open-toed sandals are not suitable.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant learners should inform the tutor so appropriate precautions can be advised.
