Jewellery: Advanced Thursday Morning

About this course

Participants develop jewellery pieces and small objects from research and project briefs, exploring techniques suited to each term’s technical theme. The course focuses on extending design ideas beyond traditional approaches and refining a professional finish. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, technical and critical group discussions, and individual guidance. Learners set personal goals with the tutor, work independently on selected projects, and record their designs, samples and techniques in a benchbook.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for advanced learners with good jewellery-making skills and around two years of previous study. Participants should be prepared to work independently, while using tutor guidance and contributing to group discussions.

Before you go

• All tools needed for the course are available in the workshop, and small quantities of base metals are provided.
• Learners need to purchase their own silver, gold, stones, saw blades and drill bits for project work.
• Bring a small benchbook and a pencil or pen for recording ideas and taking notes.
• An apron, a hair tie for long hair and sensible footwear are required; open-toed sandals are not permitted.
• The studio is on the third floor with lift access.
• The equipment requires a moderate level of fitness. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy, so pregnant learners should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
