About this course

The workshop develops techniques for working with beads and thread, including knotting between beads, cord and large-hole beads, crimps, calottes, necklace endings, macramé-style knots and tassels. Sessions build progressively, with discussion of materials and findings alongside practical making and sample development. Teaching includes group discussion, show-and-tell, critique, tutor feedback and individual guidance. Learners can also use the techniques to develop their own designs, with support from the tutor.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for complete beginners, as no previous jewellery-making experience is necessary, as well as learners with existing experience who want to extend their skills. It involves practical hand skills for working with thread and knotting techniques, alongside group discussion and critique. Returning students are welcome to develop individual designs with tutor guidance.

Before you go

  • Basic materials and equipment are provided for each session.
  • Learners may bring their own beads to incorporate into course designs.
  • A suggested tools and materials list, including suppliers, is provided during the first session.
  • Handouts are available for each technique; bringing a notebook and pen is strongly recommended.
