About this course

Beginners develop familiarity with commonly used jewellery tools, materials and workshop processes through a series of practical projects. Learners with previous experience work on a specialist technique project each term alongside personal jewellery projects. Teaching combines group demonstrations, presentations, technical discussions and individual guidance. Participants work at their own pace, agreeing learning goals with the tutor and recording and assessing them through Learning Statements. Technical and critical advice is provided according to individual needs.

What you'll learn

  • Apply new jewellery-making techniques within technical projects
  • Use metals and other materials to produce finished jewellery
  • Select suitable tools, materials and processes for a jewellery-making task
  • Follow health and safety guidelines when working in a shared workshop

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as intermediate learners developing their jewellery-making skills. Participants work in a shared workshop, joining group demonstrations and discussions while pursuing individual projects at their own pace. A moderate level of fitness is needed to use the jewellery equipment.

  • Suitable for learners with no previous jewellery-making or metalwork experience
  • Accommodates learners developing beyond introductory techniques
  • Combines shared workshop activity with individual projects and one-to-one guidance

Before you go

  • Students are expected to buy materials for their projects, such as silver and saw blades; a materials and supplier list is provided during the first lesson.
  • The college provides the tools needed for the course and basic materials in reasonable quantities, including base metals, paper and acrylic.
  • A notebook for technical notes and design ideas is strongly recommended.
  • New students with previous experience should bring an example of their work.
  • Lift access is available.
  • Some chemicals used on the course may be harmful during pregnancy. Students should inform the tutor if they are pregnant so necessary precautions can be advised.
