About this course

Beginners work through structured projects introducing commonly used jewellery-making tools, materials and processes. Learners with previous experience develop personal projects alongside a new termly design project, often focused on a specialist technique.

What you'll learn

  • Apply jewellery-making techniques through structured technical projects
  • Use metals and other materials to produce finished jewellery pieces
  • Select suitable tools, materials and processes for a particular task
  • Follow health and safety guidance in a shared workshop

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as intermediate learners developing their jewellery-making skills. Teaching combines group demonstrations, discussions and presentations with individual guidance, while learners work at their own pace and agree personal goals with the tutor.

  • Suitable for learners with no previous jewellery-making or metalwork experience
  • Intermediate learners can pursue personal projects alongside a new termly design project
  • The jewellery studio requires a moderate level of fitness to use the equipment

Before you go

  • Lift access is available to the third-floor jewellery studio.
  • The college provides the tools needed for the course and basic materials in reasonable quantities.
  • Learners are expected to buy some project materials, such as silver and saw blades; a materials and supplier list is provided during the first lesson.
  • Sensible shoes and an apron are required.
  • A notebook, pen and pencil are strongly recommended for technical notes and design ideas.
  • Learners with previous experience should bring an example of their work.
  • Learners who are pregnant should inform the tutor for advice about necessary precautions.
