Jewellery: Beginners and Intermediate, Monday Evening

About this course

Participants develop jewellery pieces through a design project informed by visual research, while extending their existing knowledge of metals and other materials. The course also allows time for personal work, with technical and design advice available during the process. Teaching combines group demonstrations, peer discussion and individual guidance. Learners record designs, samples, techniques and progress in a bench book, and complete a learning statement to review their development.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with basic jewellery-making knowledge who have attended classes regularly and are ready to work independently with advice when needed. Its Intermediate label indicates that it is aimed at developing beyond fundamental techniques rather than introducing jewellery making from the beginning.

• Some jewellery techniques require a moderate level of fitness and arm strength.

Before you go

• Tools required for the class are available in the workshop.
• Basic materials such as base metals, paper, acrylics and enamel are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Participants may need to buy project-specific materials, including precious metals, stones, saw blades and specific-sized drill bits. The tutor can advise on requirements and suppliers.
• An A5 sketchbook and a pencil or pen are useful for recording designs and notes.
• An apron and hair band for tying back long hair are requested. Sensible closed footwear is required, and warm clothing is advised because windows and doors are kept open for ventilation.
• The studio has lift access. Some chemicals used on the course may be harmful during pregnancy, so pregnant learners should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
