About this course

Participants learn core jewellery-making processes by working through demonstrations and making exercises, with group instruction supplemented by individual tutor guidance. The course covers sawing and annealing metal, filing, manipulation, texturing, soldering and polishing, initially using base metals before progressing to silver. Projects include a ring or pendant, a rub-over setting for a cabochon stone and a tube setting for a small faceted stone. Other stone-setting techniques are also introduced.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as more experienced jewellers exploring new ideas. Learning combines group demonstrations with individual tutor help and requires a moderate level of fitness to use jewellery equipment.

Before you go

  • All tools needed for the course are available in the workshop, and basic materials such as base metals and sample stones are provided in reasonable quantities.
  • Learners may need to purchase precious metals, precious stones or specific-sized drill bits.
  • An apron, pen and notebook are helpful to bring.
  • For health and safety, sandals are not recommended. Some chemicals used on the course may be harmful during pregnancy, so learners should inform the tutor.
  • The studio has lift access.
