About this course
The course introduces wire drawing and shaping, jump-ring construction, soldering and the assembly of linked chains. Learners will investigate different loop sizes and forms, create samples based on simple and more complex patterns, and develop chains for jewellery such as rings, earrings, wrists and necks. Teaching combines demonstrations, hand-outs, practical activities, group discussion and individual tuition. The course also covers the design and attachment of clasps and fasteners, along with cleaning, polishing and other surface finishes. Learners can apply the techniques to a chain of their own design.

The course is intended for beginners who already have basic jewellery-making techniques, as well as intermediate learners. Participants work through demonstrations and practical tasks, with group discussions and individual tuition. They should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, understand health and safety information, and use simple measurements and calculations.

Before you go
- Basic tools and equipment are provided.
- Some basic materials, including base metals and workshop consumables, are provided in reasonable quantities.
- Learners wishing to work in silver or on a large scale need to provide their own metal; the tutor can advise.
- Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
