Jewellery: chain making II

About this course

The course develops wireworking and chain-making techniques, including drawing and shaping wire, forming jump rings, joining links and soldering. Participants create chain samples in different link sizes and shapes, exploring patterns such as curb, Cuban, Figaro and rope. The course also covers clasps, catches and bespoke fasteners, along with cleaning, polishing and surface finishes. Teaching combines demonstrations, hand-outs, practical activities, group discussions and individual tuition, with opportunities to design and make a chain for jewellery use.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners who already have basic jewellery-making techniques, as well as intermediate learners. Participants should be able to follow written and spoken instructions, demonstrations and health and safety guidance, and take part in group discussions and practical work.

Before you go

• Basic tools and equipment are provided.
• Some basic materials, including base metals and workshop consumables, are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Participants wishing to work in silver or on a large scale need to provide their own metal; the tutor can advise on this.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
