Jewellery: Colouring and Decorating Aluminium

About this course

Participants investigate anodised aluminium through demonstrations, sample analysis and guided experimentation. Techniques include dip-dyeing, direct application, several printmaking methods and the use of resists, with relief surfaces printed individually and in combination. The course then applies these processes to simple jewellery designs. Teaching includes tutor demonstrations, individual guidance, group discussion, show-and-tell and group critique, allowing participants to develop and refine pieces through experimentation.

What you'll learn

• Colour, cut, file and form anodised aluminium.
• Apply dip-dyeing, direct application, printmaking and resist techniques to aluminium surfaces.
• Combine relief surfaces and experiment with colour in printed designs.
• Produce at least three jewellery pieces, such as earrings, a pendant or a bangle.
• Identify appropriate jewellery tools, machinery and colouring media, including relevant workshop health and safety considerations.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for complete beginners and learners at other levels who want to explore anodised aluminium jewellery techniques. Participation combines individual making with demonstrations, discussion, show-and-tell, group critique and guidance from the tutor.

• Some jewellery equipment and machinery require a moderate level of physical fitness.
• Learners with restricted mobility should check the studio’s accessibility before enrolling.
• Some chemicals used during the course may require precautions during pregnancy.

Before you go

• An apron, notebook and pen may be useful.
• Learners may bring printmaking materials they already have, such as rubber stamps, prepared lino cuts, feathers, textured wallpaper or fabrics.
• If incorporating silver or silver findings, learners may bring 0.8mm silver wire for earring wires and jump rings; silver may also be obtained through the jewellery department.
• Basic materials costs are included, while additional aluminium and silver may be available through the jewellery department at cost.
• The jewellery studio is on the third floor and has lift access. Learners who are pregnant should inform the tutor about the chemicals used so that appropriate precautions can be advised.
