Jewellery: experimental ring workshop

About this course

The workshop examines how ideas can move from two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional ring models. Participants experiment with cutting and folding paper, modelling materials, wire, metal and combinations of materials, using exploratory design and model-making methods rather than focusing solely on completing a finished piece. Teaching includes demonstrations, simple written and verbal instructions, hand-outs, health and safety information and group discussions. The work develops through quick sketches and a range of physical models, leading to a selection of rings made from different materials.

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes learners at all levels. Basic jewellery-making skills may be useful for the metalwork element but are not essential. Participants need to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety guidance, take part in group discussions, and use simple measurements and calculations.

Before you go

• The studio provides most basic tools and equipment.
• Basic materials, including base metals, paper, modelling materials and workshop sundries, are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Participants must provide any precious metals, stones and other materials needed for their specific projects.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
• A sketchbook or notebook may be brought if desired.
