About this course

The course develops stone-setting techniques for faceted marquis, trillion, square, pear and heart-shaped stones. Participants prepare a scorper, practise using setting tools and may incorporate their work into a simple jewellery piece. Flush setting may also be introduced if time allows. Teaching combines demonstrations with one-to-one support. Examples of stone-set jewellery are discussed, and group activities include show and tell and group critique.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate to advanced learners developing beyond fundamental jewellery techniques. Familiarity with a jewellery studio and hand tools is recommended. Participation includes group discussion and critique alongside individual guidance, and some tasks require moderate fitness and hand strength.

  • Familiarity with the jewellery studio environment and hand tools is recommended.
  • Using the hand engraver requires strength and pressure in the hands.
  • The class includes discussion, show and tell, and group critique.

Before you go

  • All tools needed for the course are available in the workshop, with basic materials such as base metals and sample stones provided in reasonable quantities.
  • The stones used are cubic zirconia.
  • Gravers or scorpers used during the course may optionally be purchased afterwards.
  • The studio has lift access.
  • Some chemicals used on the course may be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant participants should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
