About this course

Learners make three or four jewellery pieces, beginning with base metals and progressing to silver while exploring commonly used tools, materials and studio processes. Beginners follow structured practical projects, while returning or intermediate learners can develop their own designs with technical support.

What you'll learn

  • Apply new jewellery-making techniques through technical projects
  • Select suitable tools, materials and processes for a jewellery-making task
  • Use metals and other materials to produce finished jewellery pieces
  • Apply health and safety guidelines when working in the jewellery workshop

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners as well as learners with previous jewellery-making experience who want to extend their techniques. Teaching combines group demonstrations and discussions with individual projects, tutor guidance and learning goals tailored to each participant.

  • Suitable for learners with no previous jewellery-making experience
  • Intermediate learners can develop their own designs with one-to-one technical advice
  • Participants need a moderate level of fitness to use the jewellery equipment

Before you go

  • Participants are expected to buy some project materials, such as silver, precious stones and saw blades. A materials and suppliers list is provided during the first lesson.
  • The college provides the tools needed for the course and basic materials in reasonable quantities, including base metals, paper and acrylic.
  • A notebook for technical notes and designs is recommended.
  • Learners with previous experience should bring an example of their work.
  • The studio has lift access. Some chemicals used on the course may be harmful during pregnancy, so pregnant learners should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
