Jewellery: Intermediate, Wednesday Afternoon

About this course

Participants develop jewellery designs through set projects and personal work, using metals and other materials while building on established making techniques. Visual research, original ideas and ongoing design development are central to the course. Teaching combines group demonstrations, peer discussions and individual advice. Learners record designs, samples, techniques and progress in a bench book, and complete a learning statement to review their development. Each term introduces techniques connected to that term’s design project.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate learners with a good knowledge of basic jewellery-making techniques. Regular attendance at jewellery classes for around a year is recommended, along with the ability to work independently while using tutor advice. Some techniques require moderate fitness and arm strength.

Before you go

• Workshop tools are available for use, and basic materials such as base metals, paper, acrylics and enamel are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Participants need to purchase some project materials, which may include precious metals, stones, saw blades and specific-sized drill bits. The tutor can advise on requirements and suppliers.
• An A5 sketchbook and a pencil or pen are recommended for recording designs and notes.
• An apron and a hair band for tying back long hair are requested. Sensible footwear is required, with open-toed sandals excluded.
• The studio has lift access.
• Some chemicals used in the studio may be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant participants should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
