About this course
The workshop develops soldering technique through demonstrations, guided exercises, discussion, handouts and individual help within a group setting. It covers solder grades, preparation and application methods including chip or pallion, probe or pick, stick feed, sweat and paste. Participants practise preparing different joins, controlling solder quantities, making hollow shapes and completing multiple joins on one piece. The course also addresses common soldering problems and selecting suitable methods for particular joins and designs.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners with some basic jewellery-making experience and for intermediate learners extending their soldering skills. Participants should be able to cut metal with a piercing saw and file, follow written and verbal instructions, use simple measurements and calculations, and take part in group discussion.

Before you go
- Basic tools and equipment are provided, along with basic materials such as silver solder, copper, saw blades and chemicals including pickle and borax.
- Learners may bring their own metal; anyone wishing to work in precious metal must supply it.
- An apron and safety glasses must be brought to each session.
- Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
