Jewellery: stone setting II

About this course

The course develops stone-setting skills through work with cabochon and cut stones, including the preparation of stones and the construction of mounts. Participants explore claw and collet settings for faceted stones, tube settings and wax carving as an alternative production method. Demonstrations, hand-outs and guidance support the application of these techniques to individual jewellery designs, with the course culminating in a finished piece containing a set stone.

Is this course right for you?

This intermediate course is intended for learners who are reasonably confident with basic jewellery-making skills. Stone Setting 1 can provide relevant preparation but is not essential. Participants should be able to follow written and spoken instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information, take part in group discussions, and use simple measurements and calculations.

Before you go

• Most basic jewellery-making tools and equipment, including base metals, chemicals and sundries, are provided.
• Participants must buy items including saw blades, emery paper, two to three stones, and some silver wire, sheet and tube.
• Precious metals and stones needed for specific projects must be supplied by participants.
• Personal needle files are recommended if available.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted in the studio.
