Jewellery: stone setting III

About this course

The course develops stone-setting skills for cabochon and faceted stones, including mounts for angular and unusually shaped stones. Participants examine stone preparation, refine claw and collet settings, and are introduced to flush and grain-set mounts where appropriate. Wax carving is used to explore production methods and help develop jewellery to individual designs. Teaching combines demonstrations with photographic examples, followed by guided work on personal stone-setting projects.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners with confidence in jewellery-making skills and is labelled intermediate. Stone Setting 1 and 2 may provide relevant preparation, although they are not essential. Participants should be able to follow written and spoken instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information, use simple measurements and calculations, and take part in group discussions.

Before you go

• Most basic jewellery-making tools and equipment, including base metals, chemicals and sundries, are provided.
• Participants need to buy saw blades, emery paper, two burrs, two or three stones, and some silver wire, sheet and tube.
• Participants must provide any precious metals and stones needed for their specific projects.
• Personal needle files are recommended where possible.
• Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted in the studio.
