About this course

The course examines examples of strung jewellery before introducing techniques for threading, beading, knotting and finishing, including the use of gimp and catches. Demonstrations are followed by a practice piece, then further work on individual designs. Participants can raise questions, troubleshoot techniques and receive feedback through tutor support, group discussion, show and tell, group critique, and individual guidance.

What you'll learn

  • Create at least one strung necklace or bracelet
  • Attach fasteners securely to threaded rows of beads
  • Thread and knot rows of beads and stones
  • Use gimp in strung jewellery work

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners and does not require previous jewellery-making experience. It may also suit someone seeking a refresher in these techniques. Participation includes practical handwork, individual design development and discussion-based group activities.

  • Practical hand skills are needed for working with thread and knotting techniques
  • The class combines individual tutor guidance with group discussion and critique

Before you go

  • Basic class materials and beads for learning the techniques are provided.
  • Participants may bring special stones or beads, broken necklaces, or collections of drilled stones and beads for re-stringing.
  • Bring a notebook, pen, small scissors and a fabric tape measure.
  • A bead board may be brought if available.
  • The jewellery studio has lift access.
