About this course

The course examines why rubies, sapphires and emeralds are important in fine jewellery, covering their history, geological and physical properties, main sources, mining and processing. Participants explore gemstone cuts, treatments, synthetics and imitations, and learn how to use a loupe when assessing stones. Teaching includes demonstrations, gemstone samples, handouts, group discussion and a short quiz to consolidate the material.
