About this course
Learners develop jewellery ideas through drawing and direct work in wax, producing samples before creating a design. Demonstrations introduce carving tools and techniques, including sawing, filing and refining wax forms. Teaching combines workshop guidance with photographic examples, technical notes and advice on developing individual designs. The course also explains the lost-wax casting process and how cast pieces can be cleaned, polished and finished.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners and can also serve as a refresher for learners revisiting essential wax-carving techniques and tool use. Learners should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information. Group discussion is included, along with basic number use, measurements and calculations.

Before you go
- Sensible footwear is required. Sandals, open shoes and small pumps are not permitted in the studio.
- General tools and equipment are supplied, and basic wax-carving materials are included. Larger pieces may require additional wax at the learner's expense.
- Casting is arranged off-site and must be paid for separately. Costs depend on the number of carvings and their metal weight.
- Learners are advised to bring a sketchbook and drawing materials to the first class.
- An apron and safety glasses may be brought if already available.
