About this course

The course introduces core rhythmic and expressive elements of Kathak through general and style-specific warm-ups, demonstrated movement patterns and practice accompanied by tabla. Sessions focus on posture, alignment, coordination and the relationship between footwork, arm movements and glances. Participants explore teentaal, a 16-beat rhythmic cycle, and practise basic compositions and turns. Tutor feedback, idea-sharing and self-assessment activities are included, with opportunities to set personal targets linked to the course outcomes.

What you'll learn

  • Maintain Kathak alignment and posture through appropriate body conditioning
  • Perform basic footwork using the whole sole and heel
  • Coordinate footwork with arm movements and glances
  • Recognise and work within teentaal, the 16-beat rhythmic cycle
  • Practise basic compositions in teentaal
  • Execute five-step and three-step turns

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to learners at all levels and involves practical dance work, including warm-ups, movement patterns and rhythmic practice. A basic level of fitness is required. Adjustments can be made to movements for particular physical or learning needs, and learners should be prepared for regular attendance, punctuality and some activities outside class.
