About this course
The workshop develops understanding of tonal harmony through scales and arpeggios, seventh chords, inversions, non-harmony notes and chord progressions across several key signatures. Participants identify and analyse chords, reduce music to its harmonic structure, and work with selected piano repertoire. Teaching combines lecture-demonstrations, questions and answers, guided listening, manuscript study and practical exercises. Learners will complete short tasks during and between classes, including sight-reading, written work and piano exercises, with homework submitted through Google Classroom.
What you'll learn
- Recognise and read major and minor key signatures up to five sharps or flats
- Identify seventh chords, inversions and other chords in a tonal context
- Read and write chord progressions using extended Roman numeral notation
- Complete missing progressions from chord symbols and piano repertoire examples
- Transpose simple piano pieces
- Analyse the harmony of short excerpts from selected piano repertoire
