About this course

The course examines ways to introduce movement into jewellery and small objects using wire frames, tubes, handles, rivets, pins and hinges. Demonstrations are followed by individual sample-making, allowing learners to test and refine the techniques. Basic automata principles are also introduced. Examples by jewellers and sculptors provide reference points, while discussion, show-and-tell and group critiques support the development of work. Teaching combines one-to-one guidance with group instruction.

Is this course right for you?

This intermediate to advanced course is intended for jewellery makers with previous experience of jewellery-making processes and good soldering skills. Participation includes making individual samples, discussing work with others, show-and-tell and group critique, alongside one-to-one and group tuition.

Before you go

• Participants are asked to bring a shirt or lab coat to wear and wash between sessions.
• A face protector is strongly advised.
• A sketchbook may be useful for recording measurements and ideas.
• Copper for the main practical work is provided by the college.
• The studio has lift access.
• Participants are expected to follow physical-distancing and safe-working guidance.
