What Beginner (A1) Korean means

At A1 Korean, learners are beginning to use familiar words and simple sentences in predictable everyday situations.

  • Introduce yourself

    저는 안나예요. 런던에 살아요.

    My name is Anna. I live in London.

  • Order in a café

    커피 한 잔 주세요.

    A coffee, please.

  • Ask for directions

    실례합니다. 기차역이 어디예요?

    Excuse me, where is the railway station?

About this course

The course develops basic Korean communication through mostly spoken and listening-based work. Learners explore language for discussing hobbies, sports, family and personal experiences, while studying how to form negative sentences and use polite, honorific expressions. Teaching includes pair and group activities, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Homework is highly recommended to consolidate the material covered in class.

Is this course right for you?

This Beginner (A1) course is intended for learners moving beyond the first stage of Korean study. It requires either completion of the first beginners module or at least 15 hours of Korean study. Participation involves spoken interaction, pair and group activities, and recommended homework.

  • Suitable preparation includes Korean Beginners Module 1 or Korean: An Introduction.
  • Homework is highly recommended between classes.

  • The course is based on Sogang Korean Student Book 1A. Learners are advised to check with the tutor before purchasing it, as not all tutors may use it in class.
