Landscape architecture in the contemporary world (1990-now)

About this course

The course considers how artists and landscape architects respond to climate change and other environmental challenges through creative practice and design. It also examines how communities can participate in shaping sustainable environments and how public spaces can make environmental issues more visible. Teaching combines slide presentations, group discussion and an offsite visit to a gallery, where participants will consider artworks addressing these themes in a public setting.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for learners at all levels and involves classroom discussion alongside an offsite gallery visit. Participants should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, handouts and health and safety information.

• Includes discussion-based learning in a group setting.
• The offsite section involves travelling between sites, walking and standing while viewing artworks.
• The gallery visit takes place during public opening hours, so external noise and visitor activity may vary.
• One artwork in the gallery contains nude, erotic dancing.

Before you go

• Participants must make their own way to the offsite gallery for the second part of the course.
• The offsite visit may require walking between sites and standing while viewing artworks; a portable stool may be brought, but seating cannot be guaranteed.
• Learners who may be affected by variable offsite conditions can discuss reasonable learning adjustments with the provider before the course.
• A notebook and books from any reading list may be purchased if desired.
