About this course
The course explores landscape painting from initial observation and sketching through to completed works. Participants study composition, colour theory, brushwork, tonal value, atmospheric perspective, light and natural detail, using photographic references and direct observation. Teaching covers oils, acrylics, watercolours and mixed media, including layering, texture and combining mediums. Sessions also introduce plein air painting, with attention to changing light and weather, as well as approaches associated with Impressionism, Realism, Expressionism and abstraction. Learners receive one-to-one guidance, take part in exercises and discuss their work through group critiques and feedback.
What you'll learn
- Apply composition principles such as framing, leading lines, focal points and the rule of thirds
- Use oils, acrylics, watercolours and mixed media with suitable layering, mixing and textural techniques
- Represent light, shadow, atmosphere and depth through tonal value, contrast and atmospheric perspective
- Develop observational sketches and translate both direct and photographic references into landscape paintings
- Plan and complete a landscape painting from initial sketch to final refinements
- Experiment with different landscape styles and assemble a cohesive portfolio of work
