Landscape sketching weekend

About this course

This introductory course explores landscape drawing on location through sketchbook studies in black and white and colour. Participants examine the qualities of pencils, pastels and pens, and investigate mark-making, light and shadow, proportion and colour drawing media. Composition is approached through use of a viewfinder, alongside a brief introduction to perspective. Teaching includes group discussion, demonstrations and individual guidance as learners develop observational studies of their subjects.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners to drawing, including learners who have not used a sketchbook before. It also accommodates people extending their drawing skills or trying different approaches. Teaching combines group discussion and demonstrations with individual guidance, and learners are encouraged to do some work outside class.

Before you go

• Participants need to bring an A5 or A4 hardback sketchbook.
• A folding lightweight stool may be brought if possible.
• Some basic drawing materials, including pencils, pastels and pens, are provided.
• Participants may bring their own preferred media. Watercolours and brushes are needed for those wishing to sketch with paint.
• The tutor will advise on any other optional materials during the first session.
