About this course

The course treats the large-format sketchbook as an independent art form, combining thinking, writing and drawing to generate and develop images and ideas. Participants will examine contemporary sketchbook examples, visual research and different approaches to pace, structure and content. Teaching includes tutor introductions, demonstrations, group discussion and individual support. Drawing activities cover strategies for working at scale, spontaneous and planned methods, mixed-media processes, and using drawing to review, edit and develop sketchbook content. Reflection on individual work forms part of the learning process.

What you'll learn

  • Use spontaneous and planned drawing techniques to develop visual content and ideas
  • Structure a sketchbook around changes in thinking, materials and pace
  • Apply mixed-media techniques and processes within a large-format sketchbook
  • Respond to artists’ references through personal drawing approaches
  • Identify and use contemporary patterns of association when developing visual ideas
