Layout and grid design

About this course

Participants examine how proportions, alignment, contrast and repetition shape the relationship between text and images. They will research historical and contemporary magazine design before developing an original cover and several page-layout templates in Adobe InDesign. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and group discussion. The course also considers online publishing and hosting options, physical print formats, and the preparation of files for different publishing methods. Learners will review their own work and receive feedback on design decisions throughout.

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes computer-competent beginners, while learners with some visual communication experience may get the most from it. Participation includes practical work, individual and group tutoring, discussions and evaluation of work. English-language competency is required to follow instructions, demonstrations and written course information.

Before you go

• Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
• Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas.
• An A3 folder is advised for transporting work.
• Learners cover the costs of any final printing or hosting after the course; tutors provide information and advice.
