About this course
The course introduces smartphone terminology and core functions, including the home screen, status bar, notifications, navigation bar and SIM cards. Learners work through settings, initial setup, Wi-Fi, display customisation and transferring contacts or other data between phones. Teaching follows guided, step-by-step tasks, with opportunities to practise individually, in pairs and in groups. Further topics include organising and managing apps, distinguishing widgets from apps, controlling storage and battery use, backing up files, protecting data when syncing and using apps such as group video-calling services.

- Identify and use key smartphone terminology, including operating system and SIM card.
- Navigate core phone features such as the home screen, status bar, notifications and navigation bar.
- Adjust settings, use Wi-Fi and transfer contacts or other data between phones.
- Install, remove, organise and reposition apps, and distinguish apps from widgets.
- Manage storage, battery use and running apps, including storing large files and freeing space.
- Apply basic security measures, back up files and use selected apps for group video calls.

This course is intended for people developing general digital literacy and learning to use an Android smartphone. Its Beginner level suggests an introduction to the subject. Participation includes guided individual tasks as well as paired and group activities, with some work outside class.
