Lettering and Calligraphy – All Levels

About this course

The course examines historical and modern calligraphy, including Roman Capitals and several handwriting traditions. Participants study a selection of historical styles, then explore one script in greater depth while considering structure, proportion and visual character. Tutor-led demonstrations are followed by practical exercises and guided personal projects, which may include cards, books, poetry panels, illuminated pages and wedding stationery. Learners also develop a personal alphabet and refine their work through correction and tutor feedback. In the summer term, a museum or library visit provides access to manuscripts for observation and analysis.
