About this course

The course introduces the materials, processes and techniques used in fashion and textiles. Participants research and communicate design ideas, create fashion or textile samples, and explore the construction of a basic garment using a sewing machine and associated equipment. Teaching combines demonstrations, research and practical making. Assessment is practical, with regular feedback on the work produced.

Is this course right for you?

The course is aimed at beginners or learners with little previous experience in fashion design. Participation combines practical and theory-based work, research, computer assignments and regular assessment feedback. It is also intended to provide a foundation for progression to a Level 2 UAL Diploma in Fashion.

• A minimum of E3 Functional Skills in English is required.
• Basic IT skills are needed for weekly computer-based assignments.

Before you go

• Participants must provide their own fabric for garments and experimentation activities.
• A basic sewing kit is required, including fabric scissors, pencils, masking tape, sewing thread, needles, an unpicker, paper, pattern-cutting paper and a tape measure.
• Basic art and drawing materials would also be useful.
• The materials provision covers some card, pattern paper and a sketchbook.
