Life and Portrait Sculpture Wednesday Afternoon

About this course

Participants make clay life sculptures and portrait heads from life models in a variety of poses. The course develops observational approaches to three-dimensional form, including measuring, comparison and recognising typical distortions in figure modelling. Teaching combines step-by-step demonstrations of new techniques with primarily one-to-one guidance within the class group. Learners receive feedback, handouts covering methods, health and safety, materials and techniques, and opportunities to set and review individual learning goals. Colouring and finishing methods for completed sculptures are also explored.

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes beginners through to experienced learners, with new and returning students working alongside one another. The all-levels format combines individual work from life models with guidance and feedback within a group class. Some lifting is involved, although assistance is available.

Before you go

• Wear protective clothing such as an overall or apron, along with strong shoes or boots.
• Bring a sketch pad and pencils.
• Basic materials are included; additional material use and ceramic firing may incur extra charges beyond the allocated course materials fee.
