About this course

Participants develop observational and clay-modelling skills by working from a male or female life model in a range of poses, including portrait head studies. Teaching combines step-by-step demonstrations with primarily one-to-one guidance within the wider class. Each learner agrees individual goals with the tutor and records and reviews progress through an Individual Learning Plan, sketchbooks and photographs. The course also introduces ways to colour and finish completed sculptures, while encouraging learners to develop an individual approach to three-dimensional form. New and returning learners work alongside more experienced participants.

What you'll learn

  • Develop observational skills while working from a life model in varied poses
  • Use clay-handling and modelling techniques for sculpture
  • Explore colouring and finishing methods for completed clay sculptures
  • Apply appropriate health and safety practices in the studio
  • Record, assess and make decisions about progress using individual goals, sketchbooks and photographs
