About this course

Participants draw from a variety of nude life models in standing, seated and reclining poses, working across shorter and longer studies. Projects examine bodily proportion, line, tonal values, volume and foreshortening, with exercises focused on observational, figure and portrait drawing. Each session begins with an introduction and tutor demonstration, followed by practical studio work, individual guidance and regular feedback. Group discussion considers historical and contemporary approaches to life drawing, including examples of artists’ figure work.

What you'll learn

  • Produce observational drawings from a life model
  • Apply tonal values to suggest volume in the human form
  • Use foreshortening techniques in figure studies
  • Improve accuracy when measuring and drawing bodily proportions
  • Select and use drawing techniques appropriate to life drawing

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners to life drawing and introduces working directly from the nude figure. Basic drawing experience may be helpful, but previous life drawing experience is not needed. Sessions combine individual practical work with tutor feedback and some group discussion.

  • Suitable for learners new to life drawing
  • Includes drawing from both male and female nude models
  • Participation involves sustained studio drawing from varied poses

Before you go

  • All drawing materials are provided.
  • Participants should wear old clothes or an overall in the studio.
  • Work outside class is optional.
