About this course

Participants draw clothed models through a combination of short and long poses, using demonstrations, group discussion and individual feedback. The course examines how fabric wraps, overlaps and forms folds around the body, with attention to gesture, proportion, volume, lighting and shadow. Exercises explore mark-making for different fabrics, tonal drawing, and rendering texture with charcoal, pencil and eraser. Longer studies introduce colour, pattern and cloth texture through materials such as pastel, coloured pencil and wash. The work of artists including David Hockney, Elizabeth Peyton and Paula Rego provides points for discussion and reference.

What you'll learn

  • Sketch the shape, form and volume of a clothed figure in short studies
  • Apply basic proportion and measurement when drawing the figure
  • Use mark-making to suggest different fabric qualities
  • Create tonal drawings that describe volume, form, lighting and shadow
  • Experiment with mixed media to explore the colour, pattern and texture of cloth
