Life drawing from the clothed model

About this course

Participants draw clothed models through a combination of short and long poses, using demonstrations, group discussion and individual feedback. The course examines how fabric wraps, overlaps and forms folds around the body, with attention to gesture, proportion, volume, lighting and shadow. Exercises explore mark-making for different fabrics, tonal drawing, and rendering texture with charcoal, pencil and eraser. Longer studies introduce colour, pattern and cloth texture through materials such as pastel, coloured pencil and wash. The work of artists including David Hockney, Elizabeth Peyton and Paula Rego provides points for discussion and reference.

The course is suitable for learners at all levels. Previous life drawing or drawing experience would be advantageous, but the course also accommodates those approaching the subject with a willingness to experiment. Teaching combines group demonstrations and discussion with individual feedback.
