About this course
Participants draw from a clothed model in short and extended poses, examining how fabric follows the body and how folds, light and shadow can describe underlying form. The course covers rapid sketching, tonal drawing, texture and the use of charcoal, pencil, eraser and colour media such as pastel, coloured pencil and wash. Teaching includes demonstrations for the group and individuals, discussion, feedback and reflection on participants’ own work. Examples by established artists, including David Hockney and Paula Rego, are considered in relation to clothed-figure drawing.
What you'll learn
- Produce quick sketches that describe the shape, form and volume of the clothed figure.
- Apply basic proportion and measurement when drawing the figure.
- Use tonal, mark-making, lighting and shadow techniques to suggest volume and fabric folds.
- Explore colour, pattern and texture in cloth using a range of drawing materials.
