Life figurative sculpture

About this course

Using a life model as reference, participants investigate the bones, musculature and structure of the human torso. The course combines observational drawing, working measurements and a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum’s casting room and gallery, where historical sculpture can be studied for technique and style. Participants then construct a torso armature and develop it into a plaster sculpture. Teaching includes group demonstrations, individual guidance, small-group discussion and evaluation. Studio safety, material handling and contemporary and historical figurative sculpture are also introduced. Work is limited to a maximum height of 30cm and width of 23cm.

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes learners at all levels. Participation involves following written and verbal instructions, taking part in group discussions and evaluations, and using numbers for simple measurements and calculations. More experienced learners can extend their work through experimentation with materials, surfaces and sculptural methods.

• Experienced learners are encouraged to make compositional choices within the pose and explore surface treatment.

Before you go

• All materials required for the course are provided.
• Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
• A camera or smartphone is useful for documenting work in progress.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes must be worn. Old clothes or overalls are strongly recommended because some materials may stain or damage fabric.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required, including facemasks when working with materials that may release airborne particles.
