Life figurative sculpture intensive

About this course

Using a life model as reference, participants investigate the structure, bones and musculature of the human figure before developing a clay sculpture through observational and sculptural modelling techniques. The course includes preparatory drawing, measuring methods and an introduction to historical and contemporary figurative sculpture. Teaching combines group demonstrations with one-to-one guidance, small-group discussion and evaluation of work. Participants are also introduced to safe studio procedures and encouraged to assess and refine their sculpture. More experienced learners can explore surface, working methods and compositional choices within the pose.

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes learners at all levels. Participants should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, including demonstrations and health and safety information, and take part in group discussion. Basic use of numbers, measurements and calculations is also involved. More experienced learners receive opportunities to extend their material and compositional exploration.

Before you go

• All required course materials are provided.
• Bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
• A camera or smartphone can be used to document work in progress.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Old clothes or overalls are recommended because materials may stain or damage fabric.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required.
• Clay sculptures are fired after the course. Finished work must be collected from the studio and can be heavy; posting or delivery is not available.
