Life painting from the clothed model

About this course

Participants will paint clothed life models in short and longer poses, studying how fabric, drapery, lighting and shadow describe the body’s volume and structure. The course covers mark-making, brushwork, tonal painting, colour mixing, and techniques for representing pattern and texture. Teaching combines practical demonstrations for the group and individual guidance, alongside discussion and feedback. Paintings by established artists who depict the clothed figure will provide points of reference for developing different approaches to observation and interpretation.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers with some prior life drawing or drawing experience. Participation involves painting from a clothed model, responding to both short and sustained poses, and taking part in demonstrations, group discussion and feedback.
