About this course

Participants will paint clothed life models in short and longer poses, studying how fabric, drapery, lighting and shadow describe the body’s volume and structure. The course covers mark-making, brushwork, tonal painting, colour mixing, and techniques for representing pattern and texture. Teaching combines practical demonstrations for the group and individual guidance, alongside discussion and feedback. Paintings by established artists who depict the clothed figure will provide points of reference for developing different approaches to observation and interpretation.

What you'll learn

  • Render the shape and form of a clothed figure in paint
  • Apply proportion and measurement when painting the figure
  • Mix colour and use brush techniques to depict clothing, pattern and texture

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for improvers with some prior life drawing or drawing experience. Participation involves painting from a clothed model, responding to both short and sustained poses, and taking part in demonstrations, group discussion and feedback.

  • Some previous life drawing or drawing experience is expected
