About this course

Participants experiment with relief printing by designing and carving lino blocks, then produce a small edition of multi-coloured prints using the reduction technique. The course covers safe use of carving tools, relief-printing methods and registration for aligning successive colours. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and individual advice. Learners review examples of print and image-making, record and assess their progress through a Learning Statement, and receive technical and critical feedback on their work.

What you'll learn

  • Carve lino safely to create a printable image
  • Make prints using lino
  • Apply relief-printing techniques
  • Use registration to produce multi-coloured prints

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners, as no previous printmaking experience is necessary. Learners with previous experience, including those returning to printmaking, can use the individual guidance to develop a personal relief-printmaking project. Teaching includes both group activities and one-to-one support.

  • An interest in drawing or design may be useful
  • Returning and more advanced learners can develop an individual project
  • Learners take part in demonstrations, group discussions and individual feedback

Before you go

  • Bring pencils, an image for reference, a sketchbook or notebook, an apron and gloves.
  • Relief carving tools may be brought if available; further requirements will be discussed in class.
  • Basic inks, solvents and most studio consumables are included, but paper and lino must be bought separately from the department.
  • Health and safety procedures are explained at the start of the course, and learners must sign an agreement to follow them.
  • Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities. Inform the tutor so appropriate precautions can be advised.
  • The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
