Linocut

About this course

Participants develop a small edition of multi-coloured linocut prints using the reduction technique. The course covers image planning, safe carving, relief printing and registration, with examples of print and image-making used as points for discussion. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, group discussion and individual guidance. Tutor feedback addresses both technical decisions and the development of participants’ ideas. Learners record and review their progress through a Learning Statement.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, with no previous printmaking experience required. Learners with some prior experience can use the course to renew or develop their knowledge, while teaching includes both group activities and individual guidance.

• An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful but is not required
• Returning or more experienced learners can develop a personal relief printmaking project

Before you go

• Bring pencils, an image to refer to, a sketchbook or notebook, an apron and gloves.
• Relief carving tools may be brought if available; further requirements will be discussed during the course.
• Most studio consumables, including basic inks and solvents, are included. Paper and lino are available to buy from the department.
• Health and safety procedures are explained at the start of the course. Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities, so relevant circumstances should be discussed with the tutor.
• The print studio is not currently wheelchair accessible and is on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
