About this course
Participants learn the stages of stone lithography, from preparing a litho stone and creating an image with drawing and painting techniques to processing the stone for printing. The course also covers careful printing and editioning. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations and group discussion with individual technical and critical guidance. Learners develop personal projects and record and assess their progress through a Learning Statement. The process is presented step by step, reflecting the technical nature of lithography.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for beginners and does not require previous printmaking experience. Drawing or design experience may be useful, although the teaching is structured step by step. Participation includes group discussions and activities alongside individual technical and critical guidance.
- Previous printmaking experience is not necessary.
- An interest in, or experience of, drawing or design may be useful.
Before you go
- Bring pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook.
- Protective clothing is provided; learners may bring their own apron and rubber gloves.
- Most studio consumables, including ink, cleaning materials and solvents, are included. Paper is not included.
- Health and safety guidance is provided, and learners must agree to follow the stated procedures.
- Some chemicals may be harmful during pregnancy or irritating for people with sensitivities. Learners should inform the tutor about relevant circumstances so precautions can be advised.
- The print studio is not wheelchair accessible and is located on the second and third floors. Learners with mobility issues should contact the department before enrolling.
