Logic (Level 4)

An all-levels philosophy course introducing sentential and predicate logic for analysing the validity and soundness of arguments.
About this course
The course examines how formal systems can clarify the imprecision and ambiguity of natural language. Learners are introduced to sentential logic and then to predicate logic, using these systems to analyse deductive arguments and assess their correctness. Topics include natural and formal languages, types and tokens, use and mention, semantics, deduction, quantification, sets and relations, validity and soundness. Assessment consists of a 1,000-word written assignment and a take-home short-answer examination.
What you'll learn
- Distinguish between natural and formal languages, including types, tokens, use and mention
- Analyse deductive arguments using sentential logic
- Apply predicate logic to arguments involving quantification
- Evaluate arguments in terms of validity, soundness and semantics
- Use formal logical methods to represent relevant features of natural-language arguments
