About this course

This guided outdoor session uses available wildlife, including birds and squirrels, as subjects for practising photography in natural conditions. Participants explore composition, camera settings, natural light and weather, then consider how a single image or a wider project can communicate a story. Teaching takes place in the field through demonstrations, group discussions, individual guidance and regular tutor feedback. The session also introduces conceptual approaches to wildlife and environmental photography, with advice tailored to participants’ cameras and chosen subjects.

What you'll learn

  • Select and use suitable camera settings for photographing wildlife in changing conditions
  • Apply composition techniques and natural light when creating wildlife images
  • Use storytelling principles to shape a single image or photographic project
  • Identify appropriate equipment for photographing chosen subjects

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes photographers at all skill levels, although participants should already be comfortable using their camera. It involves an outdoor walk covering considerable distance, with frequent stops, group discussion and opportunities for individual guidance.

  • The routes are wheelchair friendly and include rest stops for people unable to stand or walk for long periods
  • The session combines group learning with one-to-one support

Before you go

  • Bring a camera with fully charged batteries, ideally with a spare set, and sufficient space on the memory card
  • A tripod is useful but not essential
  • Check the weather and wear suitable clothing; waterproof clothing and gloves may be useful
  • A plastic bag can help protect the camera from rain
  • A drink and snack may be useful
  • An Oyster card or contactless payment method may be needed for bus travel
  • A foldaway stool may be brought; the session includes regular rest stops
