Machine Knitting: Fabulous Fairisle

About this course

The course focuses on creating Fairisle-style samples with a single-bed knitting machine. Participants explore two-colour jacquard punchcards, pattern elongation, hand manipulation of floats, needle selection and knitweave patterning.

Is this course right for you?

This improver-level course is intended for learners who already have basic machine-knitting skills, including experience using a punchcard for automatic patterning. It combines tutor demonstrations with individual practical work, discussion, show and tell, group critique and one-to-one feedback. Complete beginners are advised to take a beginners’ course first.

• Basic machine-knitting skills are expected
• Previous experience using punchcards for automatic patterning is required
• The course includes group discussion and critique alongside individual work
• Moving the machine carriage requires a moderate level of fitness

Before you go

• The college provides single-bed standard-gauge Brother knitting machines, with some chunky-gauge machines also available.
• A range of yarns and specialist materials is provided. Participants may bring their own yarns for individual projects.
• Stitch-related graph paper, blank punchcards and punchers are provided.
• Bring a notebook and pencil.
• Machines are stored in cupboards and can be fairly heavy. Participants with back problems should advise the tutor, who can assist with setting up and putting away the machine.
• The studio is accessible by stairs or lift. Learners with mobility support needs should contact ALS before enrolling.
