Make a Leather Bag

About this course

Participants learn to identify and select leather for bag making, then draft paper patterns and develop them into tote bag designs. The course begins with a simple tote before introducing a version with gussets and personalised details. Practical work includes accurate cutting, assembling and stitching components, attaching handles, and applying finishing techniques. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples and hand-outs with one-to-one guidance and feedback. Health and safety training is provided before learners use machinery or specialist equipment.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners, including learners new to leatherwork. Basic sewing and an understanding of three-dimensional construction would be beneficial but are not required. Sessions involve practical work in a shared studio, standing at high tables for periods, and participation through demonstrations, discussion and individual guidance.

Before you go

• Learners must bring a basic sewing kit including hand-sewing needles, pins, a thimble, sewing thread, a tape measure, paper scissors, a pencil and a notebook or sketch pad.
• An apron is required to protect clothing.
• Learners must provide their own trimmings and haberdashery. Some materials may involve an additional fee.
• Leather, pattern paper and card are available for use in the studio.
• A health and safety induction is provided before learners use machinery or specialist equipment.
• The studio has lift access. Activities may involve standing at high tables; learners should discuss any difficulty with the tutor.
• Spray chemicals may be used during some sessions. Learners with sensitivities to fumes or particles can request further information.
• Eating and drinking are not permitted in the fashion studios, although bottled water is allowed.
