Make a Leather Bag

About this course

Learners develop a leather tote design from initial material choices and paper pattern drafting through to cutting, assembly and finishing. The projects begin with a simple tote before introducing a gusseted design with personalised details. Techniques include safe use of cutting tools, leather preparation, seams, handles, stitching and professional finishing methods. Teaching combines whole-class demonstrations, discussion, examples, samples and hand-outs with individual guidance and feedback. The studios provide shared access to specialist equipment, with health and safety inductions and specific training before machinery or specialist tools are used.

Is this course right for you?

This Beginner course is designed for people new to leatherwork, while learners with pattern-cutting or detailed hand-making experience may find that background useful. Basic sewing and an understanding of three-dimensional construction are beneficial but not required. Participation includes whole-class teaching, individual guidance and practical work involving cutting tools.

• Learners must be able to read, write and understand fluent English.
• Some activities involve standing at high tables for periods of time.
• Punctual attendance is important for the practical course format.

Before you go

• Bring a basic sewing kit containing hand-sewing needles, pins, a thimble, sewing thread, a tape measure, paper-cutting scissors, a pencil and a notebook or sketch pad.
• Bring an apron to protect clothing.
• Learners must provide their own trimmings and haberdashery. Leather, pattern paper and card are available in the studio; some materials may involve an additional fee.
• A health and safety induction is included. Specialist equipment and machinery must not be used until specific training has been received.
• The studio is on the first floor and has lift access. Some sessions may use spray chemicals, so learners with sensitivities to fumes or particles can request further information.
