Makers behind the lens: 1920-2020

About this course

This course studies the work of Claude Cahun, Lee Miller, Dora Maar, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin and Zanele Muholi across photography from 1920 to 2020. It considers how their images engage with gender, power, identity, sexuality, race, activism and political change, including the contexts of Surrealism, war and fashion photography. Teaching combines lectures, slide presentations, visual analysis, activities and group discussion. Learners examine biographical and historical context, formal aspects of selected photographs, and the changing recognition of female photographers within art history. Some material may be sensitive or challenging.

• Analyse formal visual elements and compositional techniques in selected photographs.
